We return when conditions change,
the cold becomes too demanding, light fades,
or the group feels complete.
Wednesday / Arrival Day
The first day is not really a program day. It’s simply about arriving.
Arrival & Transfer
We pick everyone up together at Alta Airport.
➡️ Departure is between 12:00 and 19:00, depending on when all guests arrive. It’s important to us that we start together as a group not individually, but as a shared experience from the very beginning. It also helps reduce local traffic and makes it easier for everyone to connect.
➡️ At the Airport
We meet right after customs. There you’ll immediately receive: warm jackets & hats. So no one has to feel cold after the flight.
➡️ Drive to Camp
• Distance: ~99 km
• Duration: ~1.5 hours
A calm, scenic drive along the fjords. This is usually the moment when you start to slow down and arrive mentally.
➡️ Arrival at Camp
Once we arrive, we start with a relaxed dinner. No stress - just eat, warm up, and settle in. Afterwards, we sit together with coffee or tea or something else - let us surprise you.
We begin with a casual introduction round:
• Who is who
• Who is Paul (our marine biologist & guide)
• Who is supporting in the house. Followed by the safety briefing.
Safety Briefing Includes
• Safety inside the house
• House rules
• Safety on the boat and in the water
• Behavior on the boat
• Behavior around whales
Also practical things:
• Emergency locations
• Sauna & whirlpool
• How everything works in the house
➡️ The goal:
Everyone should feel safe and know their surroundings.
➡️ Gear Fitting
After the briefing:
• Dry suits and equipment are handed out
• Everything is tested and fitted
So we are fully ready for the next morning.
Rooms:
Then we show you your rooms.
Everything is already prepared:
• full equipment
• clothing
• everything you need
➡️ First Evening
It may already be late, so:
• go to sleep
• rest well
• recharge
Thursday till Monday and first Day on the Water
The first day is always special.
Everything is new: the boat, the cold, the sounds, the routines.
➡️ Morning
• Breakfast at 07:30 (buffet with options)
• Getting dressed and ready
➡️ Departure
Usually around 08:30, depending on conditions.
Before heading out:
‼️ Everyone does a short swim training near the dock ‼️
We check:
• swimming ability
• proper fit and sealing of dry suits
➡️ On the Water
We actively search for whales:
• observing
• listening
• reading behavior
• assessing situations
➡️ Depending on conditions:
• first careful approaches
• optional first water entry
Sometimes it happens quickly. Sometimes it takes time. Both are part of the experience.
➡️ Equipment We Use
• 2 binoculars
• one with rangefinder (up to 3000 m)
• one with thermal imaging (to detect whale blows)
• Sonar is only used when visibility is poor,
as it may disturb whales.
➡️ In the Water
If conditions allow, we enter the water.
Important:
• No one has to go in
• Everyone decides for themselves
Even from the boat, encounters can be incredibly powerful. All decisions are made by Paul. We also film continuously - even if everyone is in the water - so we can capture memories.
➡️ At the end of the week, each guest or couple receives a 128 GB USB stick with footage.
➡️ Lunch & Return
Lunch is flexible:
• depends on weather and conditions
• snacks (regular & vegan) always on board
• sugary options for energy
• everyone has their own water bottle
We remind guests: Drink enough - but not excessively,
as returning for toilet breaks affects the entire group.
➡️ Return Time
Usually between 14:00 and 15:30.
Important:
• Weather
• Animals
• Group
...all determine the exact timing.
If a day runs longer, we embrace it. We operate within whale areas at all times, moving slowly (5–10 knots)
to ensure safety and avoid disturbing animals.
➡️ Back at Camp
After returning:
• dry suits and gear are hung to dry
Then your time is completely free:
• sauna
• whirlpool
• walking
• relaxing
• sleeping
Paul is usually around and available for questions.
➡️ Evening
• Dinner at 19:30 (for everyone)
After dinner:
• sharing experiences
• conversations
• games
• sauna / whirlpool / walks
Everyone can join—no one has to.
➡️ Evening Program
• 2–3 times per week
• Short talk by Paul (~20 minutes)
• Free additional offer (not guaranteed)
